Down To Earth Worm Farm of VT is our indoor vermi-composting facility, where we tend large drawers full of red wiggler composting worms. We feed them compostables, ie., kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, garden waste, manure, leaves, etc. In turn, they render worm castings (worm poop) which is the best natural plant food & soil revitalizer. We harvest & package the castings for sale to gardeners & houseplant lovers.

(For Orchid Lovers, see Worm Castings Testimonials)
Our other products include wooden worm-
composting bins, of our own unique design, sifting screens, other accessories & of course, composting worms.

Educational programs & workshops are offered onsite or at venues such as schools, flower shows, eco-fairs, club meetings, etc. As “The Wacky Worm Sisters”, we have taught our new thoughts & techniques on vermi-composting & the many valuable uses of castings.

Castings can be mixed into potting or seed-starting “soiless” mix
to add all of the living organisms missing in these sterile potting formulas. Two weeks after your plants get a “taste” of natural, “living” microbes, you will start to see a profound change! Mix castings with water to make “Castings Tea”, (directions on label & below), to water plants or use as spray to prevent fungal diseases. Orchids & African Violets have shown especially amazing transformations when castings are added to their diet.

We also offer numerous topics about gardening skills, landscaping, native plants & ecological subjects, geared to children, families & adults. We are a unique & popular destination in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. The most often-heard comment, as folks are leaving is; “I’ve learned SO MUCH!”
Our prices are based on worm ‘bio-mass’, exclusive of bedding (if you’re comparison shopping) which means you get honest ‘worm weight,’ which our experience has shown is not always the case elsewhere.
Worm orders (prepaid by Friday) will be shipped by Priority Mail on the following Monday (except for postal holidays) and will arrive at your door later in the same week.

We advise notifying your local post office of your expected ‘live’ package and asking them to hold it for ‘pick-up’ if you aren’t usually home when your mail arrives.

Worm Price: $34 per pound
(prices include shipping charges to one address) (sales tax may also apply)

Since our main focus here at Down To Earth Worm Farm, is producing our Premium Quality Worm Castings, we don’t like to disturb our hard working worms. Therefore, worms are by mail order only, through trusted friends, from whom I have my worms supplied.

Adding worm castings to your soil increases the beneficial microbial diversity, creating an enriched environment which will stimulate optimal plant health and vitality. We all know that compost on its own is a wonderful thing for plants & soil, but worm castings have significantly larger populations of beneficial micro-organisms added to them by the worms’ digestive system. Worm castings are the “value-added” natural health & growth enhancer that is produced when composting worms “bio-digest” organic matter, such as yard & food wastes & aged manure. Scientists are currently studying the many benefits of castings. Studies are showing that there is a reduction in plant disease when leaves are sprayed with “castings tea”.

Directions for Use
For best results, castings should be applied monthly, watering after each application.
The following directions are a good guide, but quantities

Perennials: Work 1/2 cup into soil above roots.
Established Roses: Incorporate 1-2 cups into soil at base of plant.
Annuals & Vegetables: Add 1/4 cup to planting hole for transplants or for seeds, thinly line drill or hole.
Seed Starting: Try mixing in 1 part castings with 2 parts fertilizer-free, seed starting mix.
Potted Plants: Apply 1 tablespoon for each 2-3 inches of pot diameter and water in.
Potting Soil: Mix 1 part castings to 4 parts potting soil.
Castings “Tea”: For weekly watering, use 1/4 - 1/2 cup for every 2 quarts of warm water. Soak overnight, stir, then water as usual.
Foliar Feed: Make “tea” as above, strain and apply by spraying on all leaf surfaces. Avoid spraying in full sun or on fuzzy-leafed plants, like African violets.
Castings can be used throughout your landscape. Try some on your lawn, trees and shrubs.
